The Socio-Economic Overview outlines the economic activities and other human uses of the marine environment in the NSB and provides estimates of the overlap between these activities and the zone boundaries in the proposed Network.

The Overview serves to support the Network planning process by providing information for the governance partners and other First Nations, stakeholders, local governments, and the general public to evaluate the Action Plan.

Commercial Fishing Dashboard

This dashboard supplements the tables and information presented in the draft Network Action Plan and Compendium 3 (Socio-economic Overview), providing site-level commercial fishing activity information. The dashboard presents two views: a dashboard with bar charts and a dashboard with tables. Both dashboards present the same information, allowing users to choose which view they prefer. Refer to Compendium 3 for descriptions of methods and sources.

The information provided is limited to an overview of the economic activities and other human uses of marine spaces in the Northern Shelf Bioregion (NSB). It provides estimates of the overlap between these activities and proposed Network zones, including activities identified in the draft Network Action Plan as activities of concern due to their potential to negatively impact the Network’s conservation priorities.  The numbers presented in these dashboards are not the results of an impact analysis and should not be interpreted as such.

In the implementation phase, zone-level assessments will determine the risks associated with activities of concern and any mitigation necessary to ensure that conservation objectives are met. To assist in this future work, the overview provides a summary of information around values and the economic contributions of human uses and activities in the NSB and its subregions, including activities of concern. Section 3.3 of Compendium 3 provides an NSB-level overview of many marine sectors in the area including commercial fishing activities occurring within the proposed Network design. The dashboards provide the same information as Compendium 3 but at the site level. Specific methodologies for the development of these estimates are available in Compendium 3 Appendices.

The first dashboard, Commercial Fishing, shows the Total Commercial Fishing Landed Value activity (LV Total) occurring in the NSB and how much of that landed value has been identified as an activity of concern (LV AOC) for the conservation objectives in the draft Network Action Plan.

The second dashboard, Commercial Table Explorer, displays Total Commercial Fishing Activity (weight and value, estimated crew wages and harvester profits) and Commercial Processing Activity (net wholesale value, estimated wages) within the NSB that is identified as an activity of concern (AOC) for the conservation objectives in the draft Network Action Plan. Fishery level as well as aggregate totals are displayed. Subregional breakdowns, as well as comparisons between Activity of Concern and Total Activity (Total) are also included in a separate figure.

When a zone(s) is not selected, the tool reports NSB or subregional baseline. When a zone (Map Label) is selected, LV Total represents the total commercial activity within that selection. All values are presented in thousands of 2018 Canadian dollars and may not align with Compendium 3 numbers exactly due to rounding and filtering for privacy.

Recreational Fishing Dashboard

This dashboard supplements the tables and information presented in the draft Network Action Plan and Compendium 3 (Socio-economic Overview), providing site-level recreational fishing activity information.

The information provided is limited to an overview of the economic activities and other human uses of marine spaces in the NSB. It provides estimates of the overlap between these activities and proposed Network zones, including activities identified in the draft Network Action Plan as activities of concern due to their potential to negatively impact the Network’s conservation priorities.

Section 3.3 of Compendium 3 provides an NSB-level overview of many marine sectors, including recreational fishing activities and their interaction with the draft Network, and should be read in conjunction with dashboard material. Specific methodologies for the development of Recreational Fishing estimates are available in Compendium 3, Appendix C.  The numbers or information presented in this dashboard are not the results of impact analysis and should not be interpreted as such.

The dashboard shows the Total Recreational Fishing Activity (Total Activity) occurring in the NSB and how much of that activity has been identified as an activity of concern (AOC) for the conservation objectives in the draft Network Action Plan. In Figure 1, Total Activity represents the estimated total amount of recreational fishing activity (based on the selected value) occurring within selected Network zone(s). In Figure 2, Total Activity represents the estimated total amount of recreational fishing activity within the NSB planning region, both inside and outside selected Network zone(s).

Filters are available to describe Activity based on three separate metrics (values) derived from the 2015 Survey of Recreational Fishing in Canada, and the 2019 Internet Survey of Economic Activity (iSEA). These values include estimated Days Fished, Direct Expenditure, and Major Purchases. Filters related to target species (Species) and subregion are also included and affect both Figure 1 and Figure 2. Finally, Clump Name and zone-level unique identifier (UID) filters are also included to explore Figure 1 in depth (Figure 1 Filters). It should be noted that these have no effect on values displayed in Figure 2.

All monetary values are presented in thousands of 2018 Canadian dollars and may not align exactly with estimates included in Compendium 3 due to rounding.
